Developing an intercultural game as a pedagogic tool for the inclusion of pupils with migrant background in new Learning environments

The project KIDLE aims to support the inclusion of migrant pupils in new school environments through the engaging and educational medium of intercultural board games. The KidLe project will develop five unique board games, each co-created with the help of parents, children, and teachers across different countries. These games will be bundled into a comprehensive gaming pack, available both digitally and in multiple languages.

What We Aim to Achieve:

  • Intercultural Board Games Co-Creation
We will co-create five intercultural board games (one per country) involving 8 parents, 8 teachers, and 8 children in each country. This collaborative effort will ensure the games are culturally relevant and engaging for all players.

  • Multilingual Gaming Pack Integration
All the games will be integrated into a single gaming pack, translated into all partner languages and one major migrant language per country. A digital version of the game will also be created to ensure accessibility and widespread use.

  • Implementation Through Gaming Events
We will bring the KidLe gaming pack to life through gaming events in each country and transnationally, allowing groups from all participating countries to play together online, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

  • Building Educator and Parent Capacity
The project will empower educators and parents with the skills and knowledge to use these games for enhancing their pupils’ and children’s learning, development, and social interactions.

  • Raising Awareness and Influencing Policy
We aim to raise awareness about the role of games in early childhood education and the importance of cross-cultural games in building inclusive educational systems. This knowledge will be shared with local and international audiences and will aim to influence policymaking.

Project Results:

1. Co-creation of Intercultural Games

The project involves the co-creation of five intercultural board games designed for children aged 4 to 8, intended for use in both educational and family contexts. This process includes three workshops focusing on different groups:

Teachers’ Workshop: Covers the use of intercultural games in schools, their educational value, and skill development.
Parents’ Workshop: Explores children’s playing habits, shared playing habits between children and parents, and existing ways children communicate and socialize.
Children’s Workshop: Delves into the concept, process, and rules of the game, artwork and design, and how children interact when playing games.

2. Digitization of Gaming and Upload on Project Website

The activity focuses on digitizing the gaming pack and uploading it to our project website. This step is crucial for achieving our project’s objectives, as it ensures that the final version of WP3’s core result is accessible to students, parents, and teachers. The digital gaming pack will provide an engaging, interactive experience and enhance the usability and reach of our educational tools.

3. Pedagogical Handbook on Intercultural Gaming Pack

The activity centers on creating a comprehensive pedagogical handbook that outlines how the gaming pack can enhance children’s skills. This handbook will not only provide valuable educational insights but also ensure that the lessons learned from the KidLe project can be shared with a broader audience. It will offer guidance on effectively using the games and integrating them into the curriculum, making the benefits of intercultural gaming accessible to educators everywhere.

4. Policy Recommendations for Intercultural Play in Early Childhood Education

The activity identifies key policy issues and challenges related to intercultural play in early childhood education, including language barriers, cultural differences, and lack of resources. This activity develops concrete policy recommendations to guide policymakers and educators in promoting intercultural play. The goal is to enhance social inclusion, promote diversity, and reduce inequalities in early childhood education.

Pedagogical Handbook on the Intercultural Pack of Digital Games

The Handbook is designed to equip educators and parents with a collection of non-formal educational methods. It serves as a practical guide to using our gaming pack to foster communication, critical thinking, and social-emotional skills in young children. By bridging the gap between physical tradition and digital innovation, the handbook ensures that the project’s intercultural lessons are accessible for long-term use in research, classrooms, and family contexts.

The handbook is thematically structured around the potential of board games to support inclusive early childhood education. It provides step-by-step instructions for the five digital games, each featuring clearly defined learning objectives, integration tips for the curriculum, and guidance on supporting multilingual development. From language acquisition to cooperation and empathy, each activity has been refined to help children of diverse backgrounds connect, express themselves, and build a sense of belonging in an increasingly globalized world.

Better Together

In Austria, we developed “Better Together,” a playful board game designed for children aged 7–8 to explore cultural diversity, language, and identity. The game simulates the real-life experience of migration: moving to a new place, getting to know the environment, making friends, learning the local language, and creating a sense of home.

Better Together helps children explore cultures, express creativity, and connect with others through storytelling and collaboration, while supporting skills like communication and empathy.

During the game, players progress together through different challenges - answering questions, sharing personal, cultural, and linguistic experiences, and drawing.

The game can be played online here: https://kidle.monikom.com/en
